Greenland Shark project needs YOU
Underwater webcam idea to track elusive animal
Divers are being asked to help set up a system monitoring the Greenland Shark.
The Greenland Shark and Elasmobranch Education and Research Group (GEERG) is preoccupied with this rare and little-known species. This shark spends most of its life in the deep, only migrating to a particularly shallow area near Quebec in Canada.
Since being underwater 24-7 is impractical, researchers at GEERG propose installing a system of webcams to track this elusive animal. Data and imagery from the system would be available online and accessible to the general public, not to mention schools and educational establishments.
Sadly, the shark-watching system will cost money to set up. Here’s where you can help. In order to make it happen, the general public have to vote for it. The idea has already passed through to the second round.
