Dorset ‘most dangerous for divers’

The sea around Dorset holds the ominous distinction of the most diving accidents last year.

A new report from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency details 41 non-related diving incidents in 2010 requiring assistance of the Portland Coastguard.

The number – which includes three diving fatalities – is three times higher than the national average.

Although not seeking to apportion blame per se, the report does suggest that many incidents are down to inadequate training and preparation.

Scuba diving as a sport has never been more popular and many Brits gain their qualifications on holiday in clear blue waters overseas.

But this can leave them ill prepared for UK diving with our low visibility, cold waters and challenging conditions.

However, it’s worth noting that Dorset’s ‘Jurassic Coastline’ is one of the most popular regions for scuba diving in UK waters.

Consequently a greater number of dives – and dive incidents, sadly – should be expected.
