A diver on a prestigious scholarship has completed Closed Circuit Rebreather training.

Will Arlidge is the title holder of ‘Our World Rolex Scholar 2010 (Australasia)’.

For over 35 years the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society has provided young people with firsthand experience of sub-sea disciplines.

Each year, a scholar is selected from North America, Europe, and Australasia to work with leaders in marine-related fields.

These range from scientific expeditions, underwater research, field study, or laboratory assignments.

On a more fundamental level, scholars may also focus on equipment testing and design, photographic instruction, or other specialised assignments.

Chosen participants spend a year travelling extensively to gain exposure and get hands-on experiences.

24-year old Arlidge was originally studying at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) for a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Marine Biology.

After completing his second year of university Will decided to do his Open Water Diver certification – and was instantly addicted.

From those first forays, he has now gone on to complete his AP Diving CCR training course with New Zealand instructor Pete Mesley of Dive T.E.C.

Pete trains about three Rolex Scholars a year on AP Diving rebreathers, as part of their scheduled year-long tour of the world.
