The Mares Hybrid Pro Tec is a new semi-modular buoyancy jacket.

The Italian marque is not short of BCDs in its line-up, so what’s special about this new one?

incorporates pre-shaped pieces

Well, Mares calls it an ‘evolution [in] back mounted BCDs’, which might be stretching it a bit. Mind you there’s won’t be any stretching to speak of, as the Hybrid Pro Tec incorporates pre-shaped pieces.

Take the shoulders. They’re protected with two pre-formed (and reinforced) pads.

The undervest is detachable and contains the integrated weights, specifically known as Mares Release System (MRS.) The vest can be removed for travel and the BCD used without it, if preferred.

In construction, Mares has opted for a material called Alutex (no, I can’t keep up with all these materials either) – described as ‘sturdy and durable’.

The Hybrid Pro Tec comes with 10 metal D-rings to clip your gear to, three of which are ‘customisable.’

The Mares Hybrid Pro Tec is on sale now, priced around the £450 mark.
